On Thursday 19th, the DiVErSe Lab group got together for a holiday lunch. It was a great opportunity to relax from our busy days, be infused with the festive spirit, and share some laughs. This event also served as our goodbye lunch for two of our PhD students: Beatriz Martins, who just finished the lab experiments of her project, and Mariana Pais, who has concluded writing her thesis and will be defending it soon. We wish everyone a joyful, warm and happy holiday season!
On December 16th, the 3rd Annual CIBIT Meeting took place at polo 3 of the University of Coimbra. The scientific program explored the latest results in neuroscience, cardiology, and metabolism through imaging, neurophysiological, and computational techniques. The meeting also ncluded a poster session, where our DiVErSe PhD students Mariana Pais and Joanna Sievers presented their work. Overall, a dynamic, vibrant conference, fostering meaningful discussions and collaborations.
The holiday spirits are upon us, and what better way to express them than to enter a star competition at CIBIT? Here, different CIBIT research teams took the challenge of creating a star that reflects our work on neuroscience, and the results were dazzling. Our star is called "Bench-to-Sky", and features microcentrifuge tubes in the center of a yarn star.
Joanna Sievers, our PhD student visiting from the University of Vale do Itajaí, has participated in the 3rd edition of Soapbox Science Coimbra. In this initiative, women scientists were invited to climb into a wooden box and talk about their science to the public. It was a true scientific Speakers' Corner! Joanna spoke about her research on the therapeutic effects of the dry extract of the Tagetes erecta flower in ASD. Check our Projects tab for more info on Joanna's work.
Our Di(Y)VErSe initiative had it's 2nd edition on the 20th november, and it was another resounding success! This time, our group members gave free rein to their creativity by portraing each other in a canvas with acrylic paint. The Di(Y) sessions strengthen the bonds between our DiVErSe members, and give us a relaxed moment from the daily stress, while practicing a new handmade craft.
Our PhD student Beatriz Martins has showcased her work at the 10th European Student Conference on Behavior & Cognition (Paris, France), with an oral communication titled "Sex-specific gut-brain axis alterations in autism spectrum disorder mouse model: the role of neuropeptide Y". We congratulate Beatriz on this important milestone in her scientific career and hope this conference was a fruitful opportunity for Science-sharing and networking.
On the 17th, our lab celebrated the beginning of a new school year with the already traditional Rentrée Dinner. It was a great opportunity to bring everyone together and strengthen our bonds, from MSc and PhD sudents to senior researchers, to share stories and experiences, and to get ready for the hard-working year ahead. All of this, of course, while enjoying delicious dishes of pasta, pizza and tiramisù.
Our new PhD candidates, Carolina Fortunato and João Neves, have started this month to attend classes on their doctoral programs. Carolina is a student of the Doctoral Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences (FFUC), and João of the Doctoral Program of Experimental Biology and Biomedicine (iii-UC). We wish that this curricular year brings them success, an expanded network, and lots of new knowledge, to put to use in their projects!
The European Researcher's Night happened on 27th September! Once again, the labs of research institutes from Coimbra joined together to showcase their science to the public, in our city's downtown. Our lab was present with a "Connect the Brains" game, expertly wired by our lab members, and a "Project Wheel" with all our ongoing projects. What an incredible opportunity to share what we do, in a night filled with fun and science.
Our PhD student Helena Ferreira has participated in the most recent session of PubhD Coimbra, held at Liquidâmbar on September 26th. In this event, Helena shared her PhD project with a non-specialized audience, in an informal environment, as well as two other PhD students from different research fields. The session was a success, filled with many curious questions from the public and some new ideas being generated.
On September 18th, our DiVErSe students participated in the first Di(Y)VErSe session, with the theme of Embroidery, lead by PhD student João Neves. These bimonthly events have the goal of building connections between our lab members, while learning a new craft, to foster creativity and bring some needed relaxation. This time, we embroidered tote bags; stay tuned for our next Di(Y)VErSe session, with a new handcraft skill.
Our PhD candidate Helena Ferreira has participated in the FENS - CHEN Institute - NeuroLéman Summer School on "Monitoring and manipulating the affective state: new perspectives on neurotechnologies and AI tools". Helena got to present her work on ultrasonic vocalization analysis, meet fellow PhD students and network with leading experts in the fields of artificial intelligence, cognitive neuroscience and emotion.
Our group will be welcoming 2 new PhD students, who were awarded the FCT PhD fellowship in 2024. Carolina Fortunato and João Neves will be developing their work at the DiVErSe lab, focusing on maternal stress effects on the offspring and kisspeptin-microglia crosstalk and its impact on sex-specific development, respectively. Stay tuned to our website to check their projects.
The annual teambuilding activity of our group has taken place this time at the Oceanário, in Lisbon. This amazing aquarium, with a 5-million litter central tank, was the backdrop of our moment of reflection about the past year, and about what is to come. Our group still had time to marvel at the breath-taking views of our capital, from the priviledge viewing spot of the cable car over the Tejo river.
During the week of 15 - 19 July, CIBIT hosted a new edition of its Summer School. We welcomed students from bachelor and masters degrees in Psychology, Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Physics, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, who dived into the topics of animal experimentation, MRI, PET, neuropsychological evaluation, and much more.
Our group participated once more in this year's edition of "Club Science" (Clube Ciência), in which CIBIT's researchers visit weekly the 3rd grade classes of the Montes Claros primary school in Coimbra. This time, the topic of animal experimentation was discussed, and a practical activity of isolation of the banana's DNA was performed with the students.
